CALAMANSI: The golden lime and it’s health benefits

Calamansi health benefits

CALAMANSI is a fruit grown all over Southeast Asia. It belongs to the citrofortunella species, which is a hybrid between the citrus and Fortunella genus.

It shares similar properties to lemon and lime. It is known for many names including  calamondin, lemonsito, kalamunding, philippine lime, golden lime, chinese orange, musk orange, acid orange or suwa in our Romblomanon dialect.

In Filipino cuisine it is commonly known as condiment in pancit, lugaw, lomi, kinilaw or basic dip (kalamansi juice & soy sauce) for fish, spring rolls, dumplings and various meats. Besides from being famous as a condiment it is also very popular for its health and beauty benefits. You will normally see it on popular household and beauty products like body soap, dish washing liquid, shampoo, deodorant, facial cleanser, facial cream, body lotion and body scrub. From supplements to juices (ready to drink & concentrated) At home we normally use this as condiment and remedy for cough and cold. Just like all citrus, calamansi is loaded with Vitamin C, the very common reason why it is traditionally used as a treatment for certain diseases.

Did you ever wonder why some glutathione supplement has vitamin C on it? or why most glutathione users recommended that it is best taken with vitamin C? It’s because it keeps glutathione on its absorbable or reduced form. This nutrient strengthens the immune system and increases collagen production in the body.

Calamansi extract when applied topically evens out the skin tone and refines the skin. I have a friend who shared this secret to me when i was in college. Before taking a shower she would slice 2 pieces of calamansi and spread the extract on her arms and legs for around 3 minutes. And she has a flawless skin.

My big sister used to do this when she has dandruff problems so i grew up doing the same thing. We rub halved calamansi fruit directly on the scalp to eliminate flakes, ease the itchiness, irritation and prevent dryness. If use more often it will also increase hair volume.

Drinking calamansi juice also prevents oral problems. The vitamin C in calamansi juice helps prevent tooth decay, gingivitis, bleeding gums or loose teeth. It also eliminates plaque and removes teeth stains.

The pectin content in fruit pulp is said to be beneficial in lowering blood cholesterol. It’s vitamin C content increases the body’s resistance to disease, aids the healing of wounds and prevents damage to the eyes. My mother suffered from stroke last 2006. Half of her body was paralyzed. When you see her now, you can barely see any traces of paralyzed leg and arm. This is one of her secret drink.

It’s vitamin C content ensures a speedy recovery from viral and bacterial infections. It helps the wound heal faster. I normally mix 3- 4 pieces of calamansi with honey and drink it twice a day for cold and cough.

You probably heard that calamansi is one of the most effective way to help you lose weight. It’s a refreshing, healthy and low-calorie drink. Bo Sanchez called it his morning power drink from his book “52 Healing Habits”. Regular consumption of calamansi juice purifies the organs and detoxes the colon. It prevents constipation, improve bowel movement and eliminate stored fat. Calamansi is an Alkaline food when taken pure and not acidic. Cancer cells and germs love to stay in an acidic environment but can’t survive in an alkaline environment. Our body functions well when it is in an alkaline environment.

How to take it as your “Morning Power Drink” according to Bo’s 52 Healing Habits

He drinks 28 pieces pure calamansi everday.

Here’s how:
1. Take it first thing in the morning.
2. Take it pure (No sugar or water because adding so would make it acidic).
3. Take it green (Though as you can see on the picture, it was all ripe because i love its color but it is advisable to use the green ones)
4. Don’t take anything else after an hour.
