A VAGINAL YEAST INFECTION is an infection of the vagina that causes itching and burning of the vulva, the area around the vagina.
Over 90% of vaginal yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida Albicans. Normally this fungus is completely unharmful but at some point its level can go high enough to take over our body’s “good bacteria” and cause a vaginal infection or worse.
2 years ago i was assigned to work on one of our project at site. It was located on a remote area in another town. Due to the constantly changing weather condition and dust I caught a cold and very bad tonsillitis accompanied by fever. The doctor gave me an antibiotic to be taken for a week.
After the course of treatment, my tonsillitis was treated and is back to normal but i developed another problem – intolerable itchiness down there with a white discharge. And i knew it was a yeast infection caused by the antibiotic. I cannot miss work again because i just took 3 days off to get well so i tried some natural remedies and it worked for me.
The most common treatment for vaginal yeast infection is oral or topical antifungal creams and suppositories. This can be bought over the counter without prescription but if you want to try to get rid of it the natural way like i do then below is the list of natural remedies that you can do at home.
WHO CAN GET VAGINAL INFECTION?
Women and girls of all ages can get it. Three out of four women will have a yeast infection at some point in their life and almost half of women have two or more infections.
It is possible for a woman to transmit a yeast infection to a male sex partner, even though yeast infection is not considered to be a true sexually-transmitted disease (STD) because it can occur in women who are not sexually active as well. Vaginal yeast infections are rare before puberty and after menopause.
SYMPTOMS OF VAGINAL YEAST INFECTION
The most common symptom of a vaginal yeast infection is extreme itchiness in and around the vagina.
Other signs and symptoms include:
- Burning, redness, and swelling of the vagina and the vulva
- Pain when urinating
- Pain during sex
- A thick, white vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese and does not have a bad smell
You may have only a few of these symptoms. They may be mild or severe.
SOME WOMEN HAVE HIGHER RISK OF VAGINAL YEAST INFECTION WHEN
- Have diabetes and your blood sugar is not under control
- Using a type of hormonal birth control that has higher doses of estrogen
- Douching or using vaginal sprays
- Recently took antibiotics such as amoxicillin or steroid medicines
- Immune system is weakened such as from HIV
EFFECTIVE HOME REMEDIES FOR VAGINAL YEAST INFECTION
ACV (APPLE CIDER VINEGAR)
This mild acid helps to keep the natural pH balance of the vagina and prevents the growth of yeast infection. Yeast cannot thrive in the lower pH of the vagina. Mix equal quantities of vinegar and water and dip a cotton or cloth on the solution and apply on the affected area for 10-15 minutes. You will feel a burning sensation on the first few seconds of application.
It’s better to test the vinegar in a small area first before applying on the whole infected area. Keep in mind not to overdo this because our goal when you have yeast infection is to keep the area dry. You can do this once or twice a day.
CLOVE OF GARLIC
This is one of the most effective home remedy that i tried. A fresh garlic clove cured my yeast infection completely in just 2 days. All you need is garlic clove, needle & thread.
Peel off the natural white paper shell that covers the garlic and make a small slit on the clove (without slit is also fine but i put slit for a more stronger effect) and then insert the needle with thread from the clove’s base to the other end, tie it on the base and make sure the thread is 3-4 inches in length. The purpose of the thread like tampons is to easily remove it in the morning without worry. Some women can do it without the thread so you can skip this part if you can pull it off easily.
The next step is to insert that clove inside as high as you can. Most women who already tried this will agree with me that for some reason you can taste the garlic in your mouth that’s why i preferred doing this at bedtime. I also put coconut oil all over the clove so that i can easily slide it in. I let i stay there and pull it off when i wake up in the morning.
Coconut oil has been known for it’s antibacterial and antifungal properties. In a 2007 lab study it was found that coconut oil helped kill a species of yeast. Researchers in Department of Medical Microbiology & Parasitology, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria found that the Candida albicans strain was the most susceptible to concentrated coconut oil. According to the study, less coconut oil was needed to get rid of the yeast than fluconazole. Fluconazole is an antifungal medication commonly recommended to treat yeast infections.
PROBIOTIC AND FERMENTED FOODS
Many yogurts contain the same type of probiotics that keeps the vagina healthy. In a recent Italian study on a group of women who placed a probiotic tablet in their vagina consistently for five weeks saw their rates for yeast infections drop by a whopping 87 percent. So, while science can’t yet definitively say that yogurt consumption prevents infections, a Lactobacillus tablet is proven to do the job pretty well.
Although there isn’t any conclusive scientific research proving that eating yogurt and fermented foods every day stops Candida albicans from every multiplying into an infection, a lot of women swear by it.

BORIC ACID SUPPOSITORY
According to Dr. Laurie Cullen, ND of Bastyr Center for Natural Health For uncomplicated yeast infections, her top-shelf treatment is boric acid. The substance is a natural antifungal and antiseptic, and studies have shown that it inhibits the growth of Candida albicans, the strain of yeast behind most cases of the infection, as well as other kinds, such as Candida glabrata, an increasingly common cause of infection that tends to be more resistant to other treatments.
The powder, an irritant should never be applied directly, look for a suppository capsule sold at health food stores that contains it and use for only 5 to 7 days. Consult your doctor before using boric acid if you are pregnant.

WEAR COTTON AND BREATHABLE UNDERWEAR
Make sure to wear clean underwear, cotton underwear or another breathable fabric is your best option. Allowing air to reach your genitals helps stop moisture and warmth from developing, which worsens yeast growth.
Avoid stockings, tights or bathing suits if you’re prone to getting infections since these all increase body heat and retain moisture. When you do wear a bathing suit, try not to stay in it for too many hours especially if the suit is wet or dirty.
WORDS OF CAUTION
If you are not sure about your symptoms, it’s best to consult your doctor because if you have a more serious infection and not a yeast infection, it can lead to major health problems.
